Reading food labels is an essential skill for making informed dietary choices. By understanding the key components of food labels, you can make healthier decisions and avoid hidden additives.

Key Components of Food Labels

  • Serving Size: This indicates the amount of food you're supposed to consume in one serving.

  • Servings per Container: This tells you how many servings are in the entire package.

  • Calories: This indicates the amount of energy in one serving.

  • Nutrients: Food labels list the amount of key nutrients, such as total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sugars, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron.

  • Ingredients List: This lists all ingredients in descending order by weight.

Understanding Claims

Food labels often include claims like "low-fat," "sugar-free," or "organic." It's important to understand what these claims mean:

  • "Low-fat": Contains 3 grams of fat or less per serving.

  • "Sugar-free": Contains less than 0.5 grams of sugar per serving.

  • "Organic": Produced without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers or genetically modified organisms.

Decoding Ingredients

When reading the ingredients list, be wary of:

  • Added sugars: Look for added sugars like high-fructose corn syrup, sucrose, and maltose.

  • Trans fats: These are unhealthy fats that should be avoided.

  • Artificial additives: Be cautious of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.

  • Excessive sodium: High sodium intake can contribute to high blood pressure.

Tips for Reading Food Labels

  • Compare products: Compare similar products to find the healthiest option.

  • Look for whole grains: Choose foods with whole grains over refined grains.

  • Read the ingredients list carefully: Pay attention to the order of ingredients.

  • Be mindful of portion sizes: Remember that serving sizes can be misleading.

By understanding how to read food labels, you can make more informed dietary choices and improve your overall health. Take the time to read labels carefully and choose foods that are nutritious and free from harmful additives.
